St. Mary's, Marton in the Forest, near York

Description

This is a small rural 'wayside' church with a wild-life friendly churchyard, offering a welcome and peaceful space to visitors. The Grade II* listed building is an ancient place of worship, steeped in prayerful history, architectural features from Marton Abbey, quirky appearance, described as a 'thin place' between heaven and earth. It is an Eco-Friendly Church (silver level), and a Fairtrade Place of Worship.

There are twice monthly Celtic services, weekly prayers, occasional 'Quiet Days', Easter Sunday Dawn vigil, and a Summer Creationtide Celebration.

The church is open daily. Celtic Worship is on 1st and 3rd Sundays at 3 pm November to March and 6 pm April to October.

By car: on the country road between Stillington and Farlington
No public transport. Buses connect York with Easingwold and Stillington.
On foot: It is possible to walk from Stillington or Farlington but there are no footpaths and traffic can be fast on this narrow road.

Facilities

There is a roadside parking bay. The uneven stone path can be slippery and there are steps down into the church. Toilet facilities are available during services or events.

Suitable for quiet days for individuals or groups.

The wildlife-friendly churchyard has a picnic table and bench. there is a bird feeding station and a seasonal pond, and also a seasonal labyrinth. (The grass paths can be uneven).

Fairtrade teas, coffees, milk and biscuits are available daily.
