St. Michael, Llanfihangel Genau'r Glyn, Llandre

Description

The church is set at the head of a scenic valley – Genau’r Glyn means mouth of the valley – with a small stream running alongside the churchyard from a steep wooded hillside. Although the present building is Victorian, records show that there has been a church on the site since the 15th century but according to tradition the first church was built in this place during the 11th century. The stained-glass windows are twentieth century additions and include some fine examples of the work of Celtic Studios and of the artist Roy Lewis.

The graveyard extends upwards from the west end of the church into the surrounding woodland and information boards give an introduction to the natural and cultural heritage of the site. The ancient yew in the churchyard points to the existence of an early place of worship on the site while the well situated below the church in the carpark is reputed to have healing properties. From the graveyard there is a circular trail around the woodland Poetry Path giving space to meditate and muse on verses written by local poets. It is the hub for the Peaceful Places heritage trail of churches and chapels across North Ceredigion and more information and resources are available in the church.

St Michael’s and its surrounds offer space to find peace and quiet, to discover riches of nature, or to sit and appreciate beauty in its many forms

The church is open every day from around 10am to 4pm. There is one bilingual (Welsh/English) service on a Sunday. Service times are posted on the church notice board and on the Facebook group page.
