St. Peter and St. Blaise, Somersal Herbert

Description

The Church of St Peter and St Blaise lies in the centre of a beautiful rural village in the Derbyshire Dales. We welcome visitors and pilgrims alike to this special place. In the churchyard a simple labyrinth has been cut into the grass, the outlook is across fields and there are a number of walks to enjoy from here. The building was built in the middle of the 19th century but stands on a much older site of worship. Of special note is a Norman Font and a stained-glass window by Kempe. There is a strong feeling of this having been a place worshipped in over many years.

Services of healing and renewal are central to the church's mission with St Blaise known as the Patron Saint for Healing. 'Come to the Quiet' is held at 7.20 pm on the first Thursday of each month, often candlelit and with beautiful music it provides a space for reflection.

The church maintains a regularly updated page on Facebook and live streaming of services has just begun via YouTube https://www.facebook.com/somersalchurch/

If you are travelling to a service, please contact Hilary Morgan (details below) to check there have been no changes.

Standard opening times: Open twenty-four/seven

A visitor comments: "With perseverance, and help from a young man on a tractor, I found this haven in a hidden village, north-east of Uttoxeter. Its mainly plain glass windows let light flood in thus creating a sense of calm. Its lack of fuss and simple welcome makes this a very special place.
The sideboard, at the entrance, with its fresh flowers, and what proved to be the most delicious jam and marmalade, encouraged one to leave prayer requests and to read short passages from Margaret Silf's book, Landscapes of Prayer.
