St. Mary, West Worlington, Crediton
Description
This listed Grade I parish church stands on the top of one side of a valley, through which the Little Dart River flows. The picturesque setting and a rich sense of history are entwined with the poetry of the worship held within its walls.
The tower and chancel date from the 13th and 14th centuries. Much of the church, however, is predominantly 15th century. Among many fine features are the beautifully decorated carved ribs and decorated bosses in the roof. An intricate decorative leaf freeze covers the wall plate and monument to Sir Thomas Stucley, September 20th 1663, whose brother, Lewis Stucley, was chaplain to the Lord Protector, Oliver Cromwell. A picnic bench awaits visitors in the churchyard.
The church is open every day (closed at sunset). Services are held on the second and fourth Sundays.
