St. Mawgan-in-Meneage Church, nr Helston, Cornwall
Description
This Grade 1 Listed Church has been a place of worship since the 13th century and is situated on the site founded in the 6th century by Abbott Bishop Mawgan who came from Pembrokeshire. He also founded the site of St Mawgan in Pydar and went on to France where he founded other churches. The north aisle has an original carved 16th century ceiling and the lady chapel houses the effigies of Sir Roger and Lady Johanna Carminowe. Sir Roger fought in the crusades with Edward 1 who was the first patron of the church.
The church is situated a short distance from the upper reaches of the Helford River in an Area of Outastanding Natural Beauty and the peaceful churchyard has views over the Trelowarren Estate. On entering the church the visitor can experience its timeless sense of tranquility and peace.
Standard opening times: The church is usually open, and there is usually a service in church on the first three Sundays of the month but please check our Facebook page (St Mawgan in Meneage Church) to confirm.
