Holy Well and Church, All Saints, Burton Dassett

Listed in the Domesday Book 1086, All Saints is a small church which was enlarged in the 13th and 14th Centuries from the prosperity of the local wool trade. It is now an architectural and historic gem on top of Burton Dassett hills, built on a slope which is extremely evident if you stand inside at the base of the tower and look towards the altar. It is large and very simple inside with exposed medieval wall paintings in places. There is a side chapel with a small altar and a table tomb which is used for paper prayer requests.

From the high points of the park you can see over several counties in clear weather. Locally it is often called “The Cathedral in the Hills”. Although large it is easy to be alone with your thoughts even with others present. As soon as you walk in you are aware that the very walls seem steeped in the prayers of past centuries and there is an atmosphere of quiet peace and love, and perhaps inner warmth. On a hot summer's day the coolness inside is very welcoming though it can be quite chilly in winter.

The Holy Well has steps down to it and is of stone construction and is just prior to the church car park, easily visible as you drive in.

The church is open all year during daylight hours. For services, check website. In summer, 9.00 am BCP Holy Communion on 1st Sunday, 6.00 pm BCP Evening Prayer on 2nd Sunday.

By car: M40 Junction 12, turn left, follow signs for Burton Dassett Country Park. Drive into the hills, past the car park payment machine, following road, curves to the right. At next junction “Y” bear right, signposted church. Follow road and take left hand fork to the church. This is church land and there is no charge for parking. Small car park but acceptable to park on the grass on the right. Please note to exit grass head downhill to left hand corner for access to tarmac road from farm.

No public transport service.

On foot: As above, also Public Footpath from Avon Dassett, 1.5 miles.

Facilities

Disabled Access - there is a folded ramp just behind the porch door and the access, apart from the kissing gate, is a double gate easily opened. However, the approach from the gate to the porch is on large cobbles, so can be awkward. There is a new toilet block in the church car park, (only open during church services and events).

There is a servery in the church for refreshments after services and also during events especially on Bank Holiday weekends.

There are local pubs and the garage has a Starbucks and Subway - also nearby B & B.

It is suitable for quiet days for individuals or group, along with a walk in the hills.
