Description

A priory and convent of Augustinian canons was founded alongside the River Camlad at Snead in the 12th Century. The restored Victorian church retains remnants of earlier history. Visitors are primarily aware of an essence of worship in this isolated and peaceful churchyard, lovingly maintained as a sanctuary for flora and fauna. The small community of Snead hope that our hidden church will be found by those who seek.

The church is open during daylight hours. A Facebook Page is accessed at ‘Snead Church, Powys’ which is kept up to date with service and event information. See also ‘A Church Near You’.

Location

Snead, Montgomery, Powys, SY15 6EB, United Kingdom

Directions

By car: Use of SATNAV is not always reliable. A489 two miles from Churchstoke look out for a layby on the right hand side. Coming from Bishop’s Castle direction towards Churchstoke the layby is on left signed ‘Snead’ and ‘Welcome to Wales’. Park here and follow ‘on foot’ directions below. There are some spaces to park in the grassy Log Cabin paddock close to the oak tree in the summer months when the ground is dry.
By public transport (rail/bus): limited bus service to Bishop’s Castle
On foot: At the layby/main road is a lane leading down to left - follow down the hill to the notice boards and gate, cross the paddock, keeping left of the Log Cabin and take the hedge-lined path to the church. It may not be possible to see the church until the end of the path.

Facilities

A wooden bench by the church south door gives views of the riverside, undisturbed woodland and countryside. The grassy downhill hedged path to the church from the Log Cabin paddock is not ideal for disabled access. There are no toilet facilities at the church.
Refreshments are available at Churchstoke and Bishop’s Castle. There is accommodation available at Daisy Bank caravan park (adults only), The Farm, Snead B&B, or in Bishop’s Castle and other nearby localities.
