St Mary and St Nicholas is a tiny and beautiful church. Made entirely of timber, it has a peaceful and intimate atmosphere, set in a quiet location, surrounded by trees. Take a seat in one of the pews and soak up the air of holiness inside this lovely church.

The church was built in 1896 as a mission church for Sandy Lane, part of the Bowood Estate and very much an estate village. The church is claimed to be unique, as the only thatched, wooden building built as a place of worship in all of England. The original cost was £175 and it was planned to seat 50. The timbering is in an A form with 6 pairs of trusses resting on brick sleeper walls with a steep thatched roof.

The church is part of the parish of Bromham and Sandy Lane. There is a 5 mile pilgrimage trail from Sandy Lane, via Bromham to Rowde (all SPPs). Walkers will experience the rich variety of the Wiltshire countryside as they walk through woods, fields of cauliflowers and pasture - take time to pause and reflect at the beauty of God’s creation.

Standard opening times:
The church is open daily during daylight hours. Regular services – 8am Book of Common Prayer, 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month.

By car : Sandy Lane is 5 miles from Devizes. From Devizes follow the A342 towards Calne. On reaching Sandy Lane take the first turn on the right. The church is on the right. Limited Parking available.

On foot: There is a pilgrimage walk between the three churches in the benefice (all SPPs), from St Mary and St Nicholas Sandy Lane, to St Nicholas Bromham, finishing at St Matthews, Rowde. A walk leaflet is available in all 3 churches.

Facilities

There is level access into the church. The nearest toilet is at St Nicholas church in Bromham. Pub, The George, currently closed but hopefully opening soon.
