Description

Situated on the scenic west coast overlooking the sea, Dalby Church (St James') is one of the smallest churches on the Isle of Man. It is a unique and historic building, designed not only to serve as a church, but also as a school and accommodation for the schoolmaster. It was very much admired by Sir John Betjeman, who had a great passion for churches and the Isle of Man. In 1932 the school was closed, but the schoolrooms adjoining the church continue to provide a vital role as a centre of village life. The basement (The Dalby Hub) offers an additional community space as well as a village shop. The Hub can also be hired for overnight accommodation.

Dalby Church has a reputation for hospitality. As a small pilgrim place, we welcome pilgrims to experience the silence and beauty offered here, whether they are passing by, staying overnight or seeking time away for a longer retreat.

The church is open from about 9:30am until dusk. Please note that the 'Hub' (basement) may be booked for accommodation, but the Church and Schoolrooms will still be accessible.

By car: Dalby Church (St James' Church) is 5 miles south of Peel. The church lies directly on the main road (A27) on the coast side.

By public transport (rail/bus): Monday to Friday only, the bus service to and from Niarbyl is not frequent. Please check latest timetable at https://www.iombusandrail.im/timetables-and-routes/bus-timetables/

On foot: Walkers will find Dalby Church directly on the coast side of the main road (A27) in Dalby. This is part of the long distance path 'Raad ny Foillan', which follows the coast around the Isle of Man.

Facilities

The church and the schoolrooms are accessible via a ramp to the rear door into the schoolrooms. Access to the Hub is not well-suited to wheelchair use owing to a step down from the roadside and a fairly steep path down to the Hub door.

The small garden on the north side is accessible and includes a lawn, picnic bench and flower borders. On the south side alongside the stream is a narrow grass meadow, which includes over 60 species of wildflowers and grasses.

On clear days, the church enjoys lovely views west across the Irish Sea to the Mountains of Mourne in County Down. Looking north, the view extends across farmland and the coast towards Peel Hill. In the far distance, across the sea, the Mull of Galloway (Scotland) can be seen when conditions

Refreshments are available in the Schoolrooms. (tea and coffee making facilities and flapjacks)

Dalby Church offers quiet spaces for individuals or groups, including the stillness of the church and the seclusion of the Hub.
