Description

The church occupies a peaceful position right in the centre of the village of Bromham. The first priest at St Nicholas church appears in the Doomsday book of 1086, with the oldest parts of the church dating from 1200. The chantry chapel dates from 1485 and contains an alabaster effigy on the tomb of Sir Roger Toocotes, who built the chapel. The ceiling is highly decorated and is the only one of its kind in the country, decorated with Heraldic emblems on shields. The west window in the nave is in memory of Thomas Moore, the Irish poet, who lived in the parish for 30 years.

Striking the visitor as they come through the door is the light pouring in through the windows to the right, highlighting the beautiful kneelers, made by villagers. There is a palpable air of peace and prayer.

St Nicholas Bromham sits in the middle of a benefice of three churches. There is a 5 mile pilgrimage trail from Sandy Lane, via Bromham to Rowde (all SPPs). Walkers will experience the rich variety of the Wiltshire countryside as they walk through woods, fields of cauliflowers and pasture - take time to pause and reflect at the beauty of God’s creation.

Standard opening times:
The church is open from 10-4 every day except Sunday. Regular services are on first and third Sundays in the month at 10am.
