Description

Built more than 800 years ago, the church stands on a mound bordered by two streams. Even though the village has moved away uphill, it serves still as parish church, and as a place for prayer.

Standard opening times: The church is open from 10 am until dusk (about 4 p.m. in the summer). Hospitallers may be present on Tuesday and Friday mornings, and a meeting can be arranged at any time by phoning in advance.

Regular services: Sunday 9.15 am Parish Eucharist, Wednesday 10.30 am Eucharist, and other services posted on the noticeboard.

By car – From Durham take the A691 for Consett, and turn right at the Witton Gilbert roundabout. After about 50 metres turn left into Coach Lane and pass over the A691 below. The lych gate is visible at about 200 metres.
By bus – 15 or 15A from Durham bus station, on the hour and half hour. Get off at Glendenning Arms, walk back 30 metres and turn right into Coach Lane, and cross the bridge over the by-pass. Continue to the lych-gate at the end of the lane.
On foot – From Durham – A leaflet for a 4-mile Pilgrim Walk from Durham is available. Contact Robin or Penny Minney and they will send you a copy or you can download a copy from the SPPN website. Leaflets also available from the Durham Tourist Office. The route follows the route used by the Benedictine monks and the now ruined country retreat at Beaurepaire, halfway between Durham and Witton Gilbert, can be seen (although on private land).

Facilities: Accessible toilet, tea or coffee and a welcome when hospitallers present, and for walkers by arrangement.
