All Saints Church, Hackbridge and Beddington Corner, Surrey
Description
The church and grounds provide a quiet oasis and a place of prayer in an urban environment.
In the 1840's, Hackbridge and Beddington Corner were two distinct hamlets, separated by fields and orchards. A school for local children in Beddington Corner doubled as a church on Sundays until in 1893 an 'iron church' with an exterior of corrugated iron and a wood panelling interior was built on the site of what is now the All Saints Centre. The current church was built between 1928-1930 and consecrated in 1931. In Kenneth Richardson's book The Twenty-Five Churches of the Southwark Diocese: An Interwar Campaign of Church Building (The Ecclesiological Society 2002) the designs for the church are described as having "a character of simplicity combined with dignity". A number of features of the 'iron-church' were incorporated - the Lady Chapel altar and stained glass above, and statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In the 1980's the east end was re-ordered to open up the chancel and a further reordering in 2013 provided a votive candle in the High Altar sanctuary and the repositioning of the choir stalls. A community garden was also created in the church grounds. In 2015, with the support of Viridor Credits, an accessible toilet and kitchenette were installed, the font was repositioned, and photovoltaic panels were installed on the roof.
Standard opening times: The church is open most weekdays from 9 am to 5 pm (4 pm in winter).
There is a mid-week Said Eucharist service on Wednesdays at 9.15 am, and a Sunday Sung Communion service at 10.15 am. There are occasional midweek evening and Sunday evening services.
